Divorce

A divorce is the legal process of dissolving a marriage. It is a complex and emotional process that can be difficult for both spouses, especially if there are children involved.  We strongly encourage you to seek counseling with a professional therapist and/or religious/spiritual leader you trust before considering a divorce.

There are many reasons why couples get divorced. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Infidelity
  • Abuse
  • Incompatibility
  • Lack of communication
  • Substance abuse
  • Mental health problems

Again, we strongly encourage you to seek professional counseling and/or religious or spiritual advice before making the decision to get divorced.

The divorce process can be divided into two main parts:

  • Marital Status Dissolution.  This is the legal process of ending the marriage.
  • Divorce resolution. This is the process of dividing the couple’s assets and debts and determining other rights and obligations related to divorce, such as child custody or visitation, child support, spousal support, insurance coverage, and tax obligations.

The divorce process can take anywhere from a few months to a few years, depending on the complexity of the case. It is important to consult with an attorney to discuss your specific situation and to get help navigating the divorce process.

Here are some tips for coping with divorce:

  • Allow yourself to grieve the loss of your marriage.
  • Talk to a therapist or counselor.
  • Connect with friends and family for support.
  • Take care of yourself physically and emotionally.
  • Get involved in activities that you enjoy.
  • Set goals for your future.

Divorce can be a difficult time, but it is possible to move on and build a new life for yourself.
